Avamys nasal spray contains a steroid called fluticasone furoate, which helps to reduce inflammation in the nose caused by the body's allergic response to pollen and opens up the airways to make breathing easier.

When to Use Avamys Nasal Spray?

Avamys is a nasal spray treatment that reduces the symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) in adults and children.

It can also treat general allergies to dust, pets, mould, and other irritants. If you suffer from runny nose, itching skin, watery eyes, or other allergic reactions, Avamys can be a beneficial solution.

You can use the nasal spray as a first-line treatment or for preventative measures during hay fever season.

Age Restrictions

Generally speaking, Avamys is fine for usage in adults and children over six years old. However, you should seek medical advice and follow a doctor's instructions to treat a younger child.

How to Use Avamys Nasal Spray?

Please follow these instructions when using Avamys Nasal Spray:

  1. Shake the bottle before usage to ensure the solution mixes.
  2. Then, remove the cap and spray the bottle away from you around six times until you see a mist come out of the nozzle. You should do this for new bottles or when you haven't used the spray for a while.
  3. Blow your nose to clear out the nostrils, and place the nozzle inside your nostril while tilting your head slightly forward.
  4. Spray once into each nostril while breathing in. Your doctor may prescribe two sprays into each nostril.
  5. Wipe the nozzle after each use and replace the cap. Never use the spray after its expiration date.

When to Avoid Using the Nasal Spray?

While Avamys nasal spray is an effective medication that's usually safe for adults and children over six, there may be some cases where you should avoid it, including:

  • Allergies: If you're allergic to fluticasone furoate or any other ingredients in Avamys, please avoid using it and find suitable alternatives.
  • Infections: Some people may think they're suffering from allergies, but it's actually a sinus or nasal infection. You'll need antibiotics for this to clear the infection up.
  • Surgery: If you've had recent nasal surgeries or sores in your nose, using Avamys could worsen your symptoms.
  • Other Conditions: Certain medical conditions like liver problems and fungal infections often require medication, and taking corticosteroids can result in complications.

Precautions

While research doesn't suggest that the nasal spray can cause issues for pregnant or breastfeeding women, it's still important to discuss it with your doctor or a registered pharmacist.

The long-term use of corticosteroids can increase the risks of developing conditions such as Cushing's syndrome.

What is Avamys nasal spray?

Avamys nasal spray is a steroid spray designed to combat the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, including itchy nose, runny nose, blocked nose, and sneezing. This prescription-only medicine is suitable for use by anyone over the age of six. It contains 27.5 micrograms of the corticosteroid Fluticasone Furoate per spray.

How does Avamys nasal spray work?

Avamys nasal spray contains the corticosteroid fluticasone furoate. It attaches to the receptors in the nose and helps decrease the immune system's response to allergens.

By reducing the response to allergens, you experience fewer hay fever symptoms such as itchy nose, itchy eyes, runny nose and blocked nose.

How do I use Avamys nasal spray?

Blow your nose gently before using Avamys nasal spray to ensure no nasal congestion.

Tilt your head forward, insert the tip of the bottle nozzle into each nostril, and gently spray twice in each nostril.

If you're unsure how to use this medicine, speak to your doctor or pharmacist or read the patient information leaflet.

Is it safe to use a nasal spray and oral antihistamines at the same time?

Yes, it’s perfectly safe to use both types of treatment simultaneously.

What’s the difference between Avamys and Flixonase?

Avamys and Flixonase both contain the same active ingredient: fluticasone furoate. Because of this, they’re very similar, although some reports suggest that Avamys generally works faster.

Because this contains a steroid, is it dangerous?

Systemic effects of nasal corticosteroids can occur if high doses of this medicine are used for prolonged periods.

However, these effects are much less likely to occur than oral corticosteroids and may vary in individual patients.

What is the dosage of Avamys nasal spray?

The recommended dose for adults and children over 12 is two sprays into each nostril once daily.

Once symptoms have reduced, the dose can be lowered to one spray in each nostril once daily.

For children between the ages of 6 and 11, the usual starting dose is one spray, once daily, into each nostril to ease nasal congestion.

Who shouldn't use Avamys nasal spray?

Do not use this medicine if you've ever experienced a serious allergic reaction to any medicine.

Speak with your doctor or pharmacist if you:

  • have liver problems
  • have glaucoma or cataracts
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • are taking medicine to treat fungal infections

This medicine is not suitable for anyone under the age of 6 years old.

This medicine is not suitable if you're taking other steroid-based medication.

Yes, some specialists may recommend that you use it for non-allergic rhinitis that's triggered by things like strong odours and smoke.

What should I do if I miss a dose?
