How it works

  • What is Cerazette?

Cerazette is an oral contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy. It contains the active ingredient Desogestrel 75 micrograms. This is a synthetic version of the natural progestogen sex hormones produced in the body.

  • How does it work?

Desogestrel works mainly by stopping your ovaries from releasing an egg each month (ovulation). It also increases the thickness of the natural mucus at the neck of the womb. This makes it more difficult for sperm to cross from the vagina into the womb. It also thins the womb lining (endometrium), making it more difficult for any successfully fertilised eggs to implant there.

  • How effective is Cerazette?

Cerazette and other progestogen-only pills, if taken correctly, are more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. However, if you have severe diarrhoea or vomiting it may not be effective. If this happens, you should follow the advice for a missed pill in the patient information leaflet.

FAQs

  • What should I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, you should take it as soon as you remember. Missing one dose but taking it within one day means you will still be protected from pregnancy. If you miss two consecutive doses, you may not be protected from conception, and so you should consider using other methods of protection such as condoms.

  • When should I start taking the pill?

If possible, begin taking the pill on the first day of your period. If you begin taking the pill in the first five days of your cycle, you will be immediately protected from pregnancy. If you begin later in your cycle, you will need to use other methods of protection like condoms.

  • Can I use this when breastfeeding?

It is recommended that you wait six weeks after having a baby before using some types of pill. Speak to a member of the team about options available to you.
